HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012

May this New Year bring Health, Happiness,
Love, Peace and Joy to you all.
Please take that first baby step for a healthy new you.
Throw out the junk food you have hidden somewhere in the back of your pantry or fridge. Come on you know what I mean..!
The oreo's you "bought for the kids" that somehow they don't even know you have and guess what? They shouldn't have them either with childhood obesity at the highest levels ever.
Drink more water..okay so you gag on it and need sweet drinks...NO YOU DON'T...!
If you have one glass of water every time you eat you will be doing your body good.
Don't forget breakfast.. Yes, I know you have heard it all before...it's true and you will hear it more..No sugary cereals either, that's just like cookies and milk...
I don't want to make you crazy on this the start of a New Year but if you keep it simple you won't get off track.. Try and have a protein and healthy carbohydrate with your 3 main meals and for your snacks think a handful of almonds or an apple...Don't forget that water!
Next you know what I'm gonna say....GET MOVIN'.. Your choice here but do something. Walk, run, swim, you know the deal..DO IT.. don't forget to add weights to your workout. It helps build strong muscles yes but it also helps to build strong bones, so get lifting.
Don't forget to bend over and try and touch your toes, without bending at the knees..(no cheating here..!) If you can't touch your toes then either your hamstrings (the muscles in the back of your legs) are tight or your BELLY is in the way. Stretching is great for muscles and flexibility.
And my biggest and best tip for the New Year is check with your Doctor before starting any diet or exercise program just to be safe. Keep your goals simple so you don't get frustrated and you will succeed. Stay positive and good things will happen.
Happy New Year

Does this sound like you?

With Thanksgiving past and the December Holiday's  just around the corner you may be wondering if there will be a solution to your resolution?
Ask yourself if you have ever said.....

I won't eat all day to save up for dinner later..

I will work out twice as hard at the gym when the holiday's are over..That is if you even have a gym membership..

I will call Leslie, she will fix me right up? That's interesting huh?

Or the best is...It is holiday time so I'm gonna enjoy myself now and worry about it come January 1st when I make my NEW New Year Resolution to lose weight and get in shape.

So let's review..... If you decide to starve all day just to stuff yourself later what does that do? NOTHING..you aren't burning many calories during the day cause odds are your energy level has pooped out due to the proper energy source (fuel) that your body needs to run all day, but the biggest thing is your body will store what fat you already have to protect it from starvation. Yes even if it's only one day..Then you sit down to that meal, eat it all up like you never saw food before, can't move because you are stuffed, then you sit some more..it's late now and your body is tired from all the "stress" you put it through so you go to sleep...Now the 5000 calories you probably ate are doing what? You guessed it...storing in your fat cells.. are you thinkin' Leslie that is harsh?!
It's not because January 2nd you are gonna ask me to take it all away from you so it's my job to be truthful.
Now about that membership...most of us humans don't really like to workout so ask yourself can you push yourself beyond your comfort zone to make the changes you want? Remember you said you will workout twice as hard.. The answer will most likely be NO !

So the next answer is hire a trainer if you can or just join the gym, be true to yourself while you sweat..slow motion isn't gonna do it..! As far as me "fixing it"..I can show you the road but you must take the path and fuel your body with good energy to make the trip. If we workout hard and you stop at Micky D's on the way home it won't work..! That is the HARSH TRUTH and you will be wasting your money thinking I can "fix it"..!
Eat small meals durning the day, every 3 hours is good this way you won't stuff yourself silly and you will be closer to your goals..I promise..
Happy Holiday's

More reviews on home workouts.

P90X, Insanity, Rushfit-Are these workouts for everybody?

A while back I gave MY OPINION (take it from where it comes) about the "Insanity" home workout. Once again it's time for me to post a review that I feel is right on. Please read it if you are considering any of these home workouts. In all fairness to this article I cannot give MY OPINION about the Rushfit because I haven't checked it out however I can regarding Insanity ( I did back in March) and P90X.

Reviews are just opinions that people make, while some people swear by'em there are some folks that could care less and have to try something out for themselves. That being said I tend to lean on the side of reading all I can before I make a big purchase. I do this now because I have tried the other way before and have been pissed (for a lack of a better expression) at myself for not listening to the dang reviewers.
I really like P90X and Tony Horton or is it the other way around? OK, just trying to be funny..Tony is great.I have Beachbody Power 90 and Ab Ripper of course P90X along with the crazy pull-up bar that you have to pay extra for but is worth it in MY OPINION.
I won't waste time is re-writing MY OPINION again on the Insanity workout, you can look back on the blog or just check out the link for a more updated review. Protecting your joints and good form are key, so FOR ME Insanity is insane.
Bottom line...Eat right, warm-up before any exercise, stretch after exercise and drink plenty of water especially on these crazy hot days, get a good nights rest and if you have any questions drop me a line and I will do my best to help you..  Always..

Cook Book Tuesday

Making it Vegan Stir Fry
You can add any veggies you want
but what I am doing is this..
Fresh brussel sprouts (8) sliced in half
Fresh broccoli (small head)
Fresh cauliflower (half head)
Sliced fresh yellow pepper (1)
6 garlic cloves diced
1/4 cup olive oil
1 small yellow onion chopped
Sea salt to taste
1/4 cup teriyaki sauce
Fresh ground black pepper to taste
Half a package of firm tofu cut into chucks
Chicken less chicken strips (yes chicken less chicken, this recipe is vegan)

Sautee in a wok or large skillet olive oil, brussel sprouts, garlic and onion just til sprouts get slightly brown then add all remaining veggies, sautee just til slightly tender, add tofu, chicken less chicken strips, salt, pepper and teriyaki sauce. Mix and let simmer for approx 5 minutes and serve with a side of Quinoa.

This meal is crazy high in protein and super yummy.
Where do you get chicken less chicken you ask? Thought I forgot to mention it huh? Well, Trader Joes sells meatless meat and so does Whole Foods. Of course you can use regular meat but then it won't be vegan.
Wanna lose weight, have great looking skin, lose weight, have shinny hair oh and lose weight???
Go vegan for a week..You will thank me for it. Oh heck, can't commit to a week? Try 1 full day for starters..
Let me know what you think...

Today I feel like keeping it simple.
I'm making MANGO SALSA...
You can make it too, it's very easy and it's yummy over Chicken or Salmon, you can even make a fish taco taste sweet. Be creative with your food so you don't get bored.

MANGO SALSA
2 freshly squeezed limes
2 large mango's cut into 1/2 inch cubes
4 tbsp green onions, thinly sliced
1 tbsp jalapeno pepper, minced
1 1/2 tsp honey
Fresh ground pepper & sea salt to taste
1/2 cup cilantro, chopped

In a medium bowl combine all ingredients except cilantro.
Let stand for 20 minutes for flavors to come together.
Add cilantro just before serving.

In case you are wondering, I'm having grilled chicken and quinoa with my Mango Salsa.
Have a great day, get moving, burn fat, stay strong & never give up...

Spring is in the air..!

Spring is in the air so what does it mean?

It's better weather, longer days and plenty of sunshine (we hope) but there is more to it as well.
It also means that there should be NO excuse not to get in shape. I'm not talking silly stuff here, it's your life and health, let's take the first steps together to get strong, feel energized and damn proud of yourself for shaking off the winter blues.

1) Better weather means there is NO reason to stay inside, get out and walk, run or both.
Bike riding is another great way to get in shape and feel good. Go to the playground with the kids, but don't sit your booty on the bench while the kids are running, get up and move with them, there is no reason why you can't climb on the play gym too.

2) The days are longer so I don't want to hear you don't have time. After the kids get home from school and do their dreadful homework you all can head to the great outdoors and walk together, this is also a perfect time to chat with the kids about their day while walking off your lunch with the girls. Now I have two of my own and I get that maybe the extra bonding might be harder then sitting with a glass of wine and some chips however I can promise you will all benefit.

3) Sunshine, well sitting inside doesn't allow you another one of mother nature's gifts. The gift of natural vitamin D...Now what's so great about this is it helps our bones, teeth and a ton of other stuff.
Now if these aren't enough reasons to get out there and enjoy spring, maybe this one will be enough...
It's almost summer and swimsuit time..do you really want to sit on the beach or on your friends boat and say "if only I made the time when spring started"!
No you don't!
What about the swimsuit you were able to grab at the end of last season, you saved a ton of cash but gained a ton in your....., you know you never wore it so it couldn't have shrunk in the wash. Come on guys, no more excuses.
If you don't want to call me up for some one on one then get out there and do it yourself.
You will love what you see and love me for pushing you and saying it like it is..

Insanity 60-Day Total-Body Conditioning Program

Insanity 60-Day Total-Body Conditioning Program
Check Out this review before you make a purchase.
I have tried this workout, it's crazy and so not for everyone.
Be safe if you dare to try this. Remember to always do your workouts to your own degree
and if you have any doubt, hire a trainer (hopefully me).
If you want to make the investment in Beachbody products there are truly many on the market that work so long as you put in the DVD.
Find your fitness level and don't think because it's advanced it will give you faster results.
I like Beachbody, Love Tony Horton but remember the best trainer can't give you the "six pack" we are all looking for, you and only you hold that power so drop your fork a little bit sooner, pass on the chocolate chip cookies and get your booty off the couch.
Have a healthy weekend, don't put off til tomorrow what you can do today.

Step360 review

This is my new piece of equipment. I have been wanting
this since I first saw it, now that I have it, am I happy with it? Yes..Yes..Yes...It's similar to the Bosu and if you know me you know I love my Bosu.
So what makes this different? For starters it is the flat top, this offers you ankle stability however with the base being two air chambers much like two inner tubes this is what gives the Step360 it's movement and what gives your muscles and your core the workout. Working out on a wobble like piece of equipment keeps your muscles engaged to keep you balanced, you don't even realize that you are working through your abs while standing on this.
On to the next part..I like to workout with resistance (weights, exercise bands etc.) Step360 offers you the ability to hook exercise bands right under the platform and MAN O MAN does that just change things up!
Adding resistance while balancing is crazy fun plus you get my favorite kind of workout, COMPOUND MOVES..What's this your wondering?? It's working more then one muscle group at the same time, for example lunges and shoulder presses, and why is this such a great thing? Because it's time under tension, you get a lot of muscles working which raises your heart rate, while burning more fat which makes you look and feel great and BANG your cardio is done, muscles are feeling toned, cloths are feeling more comfortable and you can say "damn that Leslie knows her stuff"..!!
I expect you all to call me now to set up an appointment to come and workout with me and my Step360..!
Have a great day..

Leslie, what is this around my belly?

I’m eating great why isn’t this weight coming off of me? It must be our workouts!

OK, this is the blame game! My question is, have you been journaling your eating habits? What did you have for breakfast, lunch and dinner yesterday? What are you PLANNING on eating today?

You want to really hold yourself accountable, but most people find that looking for another excuse, reason or person is the answer for why  weight just isn't moving in the direction they may want it too.
You need to write down everything you eat, the time you eat it, the amount and yes be truthful! You may see that you aren't eating enough and that's as bad as eating the wrong choices.
Skipping meals isn't the answer either and I can’t stress enough that salami, cheese & crackers are not on the lean eating program even if sliced apples are included!!
For more tips on exercise and nutritional assistance please feel free to contact me or stop by Complete Physique Gym and say hi.

Cook Book Tuesday

Wow, seems like it was just Cook Book Tuesday and here I am again sharing what my family is having for dinner. Remember some of the reasons for this CBT is to prepare something healthy, make enough for your next meal whether you use it for breakfast or lunch it's one less thing you have to think about tomorrow, and the biggie is....family time at the dinner table..
Today's meal is...
CHICKEN STIR FRY
1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into strips
1 cup cooked brown rice
1/2 tsp Sea Salt
2 gloves garlic, minced
1 1/2 cups broccoli florets
1 cup sliced mushrooms
1/2 cup sliced water chestnuts
1 cup sliced carrots
1 cup green onion, sliced

Marinade:
2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 Tbsp minced ginger root
2 tsp low sodium soy sauce
1 garlic clove minced
Dash of hot pepper sauce

Combine all marinade ingredients together pour over chicken and put it in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
Heat olive oil in a wok or large skillet, saute garlic then add chicken and continue to saute til chicken is no longer pink. Add all veggies til soft. Remove from heat and add cooked rice. Serve it and enjoy it.

Wake Up And What??.. EAT..!

Breakfast
You say you don’t have time for that or you don’t like to eat in the morning, (excuse). I’m sure you’ve heard by now that this is the most important meal of the day and I’m here to say it to you again. You must eat to give your body the fuel it needs to get going. After a hopefully good nights rest your body has been fasting for 7 or 8 hours and your gas tank or your energy source is empty. I don’t think your car will get you very far if you didn’t gas it up so how can you expect your body to take you places if you don’t fuel it up with some good energy. A healthy balanced breakfast will allow you to sustain an amazing work out with energy to spare. In trainer talk, you will “hit the wall” if your energy level crashes during a workout, and your car (your body) will just come to a stop. You may even feel nauseous, or worse, throw up! Treat your body like the fined tuned machine it is. EAT!

NO PUDGE BROWNIES

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday OH MY....
I know you must be thinkin, today was such a beautiful day here on LI, it's the weekend so let me reward myself with a little sweat treat or maybe you're just thinkin it's time once again to cheat on your diet!?

Maybe it's just chocolate time?
How about going to a friends house for dinner, you need to bring a little something yet you really WANT to stick to your program?
Well, if you haven't had the pleasure of indulging in these little chocolate bundles of joy then maybe you should try'em.
That being said, speaking from a trainer's perspective I am not recommending eating the whole entire box, if you follow the directions a serving is just enough without the guilt.
Check out their website (www.nopudge.com ), buy them, try them, share them..ENJOY THEM...
I am really trying to be fair and allow you guys to see that there are other options to "cheat" with.
You don't need a bakery sweet treat to be satisfied.
Of course I would prefer you don't ever eat any sugar again but that's just not realistic for most folks.
We all must find another way to widdle at our middle and keep a smile on our face, so please keep up with your daily workouts, cut your portions, add more protein and fiber..
Keep up the good work...See ya at the gym..

I Don't Want To Sweat Today!!

OMG are you kidding me? I would like that to be my answer so this is a tough one but I must remain professional since I am after all a trainer, my answer is…get over it!
Well this is just one of the many excuses I'm gonna to post from time to time just for you guys to read..
Maybe you can see yourself in one of the many excuses I hear, or maybe you'll even have a laugh or two. The best one happened today in the gym, but I will save that for last. Oh and I won't mention any names so not to cause my very amazing client any embarrassment..OK L.S.?
My answer to SWEAT!!!
Do you really want change?
A little sweat is a good thing. Sweat is our bodies natural cooling system and you'll have plenty of time throughout the day where you can avoid sweat but at the gym or during an at home workout DVD sweat means you really want to make a difference towards your journey to a new you. Sweat Baby!!
Now as promised..
As sweat would have it during an intense interval ball toss all while shuffling and  doing crab crawl squats with my client L.S., the outburst of a new "excuse" popped from her mouth..she said while breathing heavy.." I don't think these are the right sneakers for this"...OMG.. First let me say that after I said WHAT??? We both broke out into hysteric's, she realized that wholly crap Leslie is gonna post this...Would I doooo that???? Yes and why not? It's gonna be a classic. In case you're wondering did I cut her some slack because she wasn't wearing the "right" shoes the answer is NO.. The shoes were perfect, the workout was making her SWEAT..I did my job..

Cook Book Tuesday

Once again it's Cook Book Tuesday.
Tonight's yummy dinner is.....Drum roll please...
Turkey loaf.
The key to staying on track with eating well is planning ahead.
This is one of those meals that can carry over for lunch tomorrow
so why stop at a deli when you have all the goods waiting to be packed in a cooler?
The answer is the hard truth, it's plain down right lazy... Now I know that sounds harsh
and you're thinking what got into Leslie today? But even I'm guilty of the quick fix.

Now before you say anything, this isn't the
dried out meatloaf you may think it is.
Where's is the ketchup? Where's the tomato sauce? Where's the bread crumbs?
Not in this recipe, this will be the most tender meatloaf ever and it is "clean eats" along with
a lot of protein.

2 1/2 lbs. ground turkey
4 egg whites
1/2 cup chopped celery
1 small onion
3 gloves garlic
1/4 cup dried basil
1/4 cup ground flax seed
Sea salt and pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 375*
Place ground turkey in a large mixing bowl and add all ingredients,
I like to scramble up my egg whites first then pour them in (it's just me).
Mix it all together well, then place it into a loaf pan, and bake it for 1 hr or until
your meat thermometer reads 160*
Remove and let stand for 15 Min's. Why? so when you cut it you get slices, cut to early and you get
a pile of ground turkey, that's how tender this is.

Serve this with a side dish of fresh spinach, sauteed in garlic and olive oil
along with 1/2 of a SMALL sweet potato.

You can stretch this meal so many ways, breakfast in the morning because WE DON'T SKIP THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY..! Whip up some egg whites for an omelet, chop some peppers along with a 1/2 slice turkey loaf, place all into a skillet and poof..BREAKFAST..You need this meal on the go, throw it into a WWW ( whole wheat wrap) and out the door you go with a great start to the day.

Start today for a healthy tomorrow..

Happy Valentine's Day

Today is the day when you either give your sweetheart a sweet treat,
or you're the one getting a sweet treat.
Either way remember, moderation is the rule, today is Monday the first day
of your new week after your "weekend" of enjoying maybe a wee bit too much.

Okay, I hear your pain I really do and you just want to tell me that tomorrow is Tuesday
and you're gonna start then! Well, I'm so easy going these days aren't I?
The answer is one for you to think about....Why put off til tomorrow what you can do today? Right?
So what's that sayin'?
Listen, every day is a challenge, there's always going to be something getting in your way
so don't use a Holiday to bump you off track. Stay strong and focused, I promise if you use the MODERATION rule you will thank yourself on Tuesday instead of kicking yourself.

The worst part of letting yourself go on a Monday for most people is that once you do it the rest of the week you'll be saying OH WELL I will just start next Monday and by then you have gained 3 or more pounds and there is the cycle, the cycle we all have to break.

So take with you today that it's OK to go off track (IN MODERATION), just get back on fast.
Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Friday RIGHT?

Friday is the end of a work week, also it's the beginning of the weekend
as you are aware, so what does that all mean for today and my blog?
The weekend's are for fun, eating out and drinking, RIGHT?
Not exactly!! Bet you just thought,"what are you saying Leslie"?

Well weekend's should be fun maybe even relaxing, taking a day off from working
out all week RIGHT?
But they shouldn't be about downing those high calorie
drinks and eating fast food or large amounts of really tasty sweet treats.
Hey, I'm all for a "cheat day" just like anyone else and I love my wine too,
but on Sunday morning when I get on the scale I don't wanna have a stroke
when I see I've gained 3 more pounds! (I have done this, minus the stroke)
So my advice for the day is to keep it simple, enjoy your weekend, rest, relax, party,
whatever you want, but eat and drink in moderation!
I would suggest you stay on your program, continue to eat clean,
drink water & green tea, but I'm learning that not everyone feels the same way I do, so I will say this...
Remember Monday is around the corner, it's a new day and the start of a new week.
Stay positive and great things will happen!

Cook Book Tuesday

In my house, every Tuesday is what we call Cook Book Tuesday. Now don't laugh,
it's fun while it also helps to keep the family at the table (thats a rule). We use recipes
that are healthy and we stick to it.
We used to have Pizza Tuesday's but as you can imagine the waist line was growing
so that quickly got switched (yes even Personal Trainers eat pizza, ok maybe not all
do but this one does..lol)
Now you don't have to have the traditional "Family" I certainly don't but what I do
have are 2 young boys, myself and my date man. He is an awesome cook so that's
real fun for me, WHAT A BENEFIT!! Tonight we are having Breakfast for Dinner,
I like this because it's easy and wow, you get protein and healthy carbs in a very fast
and yummy meal. I will chat about protein and carbs another day but this is the recipe for tonight..

4 egg whites
1 egg yolk
2 Tbsp skim milk
1 Plum tomato, chopped
1 garlic clove
1 good handful fresh spinach
1 Tbsp chopped onion
Olive oil cooking spray

Scramble up those egg whites with the yolk of course.
Saute' the veggies just til they are soft (not too soft)
Now this is your choice, you can either do this omelet style
which would be to pour eggs into a fry pan, cook til firm then add
veggies to one side and flip the other side over. Nice perfect omelet
there or you can do it my way, use the same fry pan you softed veggies in,
pour eggs over your veggies and mix it together..Yummy either way.

This recipe has 203 cals/20g protein/18g carbs/2g fiber..
This recipe is 1 serving, double to how many you are serving..
"Tip of the day"..make extra, you can use leftovers for your next meal,
add a whole wheat wrap and you have a breakfast burrito..You can Thank me later!!

Recipe today is from The Eat Clean Cookbook
